Envelopes and Labels Errors

V

valt6

I cannot print envelopes/labels, nor change options/fonts; cannot even access
"labels" -- I keep getting the message: "This is not a valid measurement."
Also, I cannot change fonts (Format/Fonts/Fonts:) nor Font style: nor Size:
-- I keep getting the message: "This font style name does not exist." I'm
using Word 97 in Windows XP.

Try deleting and reinstalling it. Some of the messages you are getting
suggest a problem with the printer driver.

V

valt6

I deleted the old and reinstalled SW; no change. However, the "glitch"
during startup is now gone (thank you, I think).
Another piece of this puzzle -- the font names do not show up in the
Format/Font window. Only the first letter of the font shows up under the
Font: ; ditto for Font Style: ; and, only the first digit for Size:. Also,
the Preview section of Format/Font is blank. Help....

Google finds only one previous thread on "This font style name does not
exist," and it was inconclusive. As for "This is not a valid measurement," I
find one thread reporting a problem apparently identical to yours, but it is
a one-message thread (no replies and no solution). Another thread reports a
similar problem, with a reply suggesting reposting in word.printingfonts, so
it is similarly inconclusive.

So it would appear that the problem is not unknown, but no solution has been
offered.

At this point, I can only suggest general troubleshooting steps:

1. Since you've already reinstalled the printer driver without effect, you
might see if the manufacturer has an updated printer driver that might help.

2. The MSKB doesn't seem to offer an article on troubleshooting font
problems in Word 97, but you might look at "Part 1 of 'General Information
and Troubleshooting' about Word 2000 fonts" at
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=259319

3. You might also try the general troubleshooting steps in
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm, beginning with
starting Word with the /a switch.

4. It's possible that a question in microsoft.public.word.printingfonts
would attract the attention of more knowledgeable users.

I'm sorry I can't be more helpful.

If all you are seeing is the first letter of words in your dialog
boxes and drop down lists then I'd say you have Compatibility Options
set for Windows 95 on Winword.exe.

Word 97 runs fine on Windows XP so remove the Compatibility Options
and see if that resolves the issue.

Once you take off Windows 9x Compatibility mode, you 'may' have to delete
and reinstall the printer driver again; but all of your symptoms should
clear up.

I almost mentioned this but didn't know whether it applied to anything
beyond filenames or not. Thanks for the backup, Beth.

I noticed all text/combo boxes displayed only the first letter
throughout the application when I turned the Compatibility Option on
to see if was the cause of Word 97 saving files using the first letter
back when this issue first came up.

Very strange looking, actually, the list boxes would display the full
name but once you made a selection from the list only the first letter
would show.

I found Tools/Options/Compatability. No "Option" boxes are checked. When I
click on "Font Substitution" --> No font substitution is necessary. All fonts
used in this document are available.
Recommended options for: Microsoft Word 97

(Background leading to present problem:) Laptop purchased with (Office)
Word 2003 pre-installed. I added (Office) Word 97 which, yes, worked just
fine except for the constant attempt by Word 2003 to take over whenever I
clicked on Word 97 or any Word 97 document. So, I deleted Office/Word 2003.
Began having problems working with Word 97: error messages like "Cannot find
Shell.dll" started poping up. Took laptop back to seller whose technician
found a "Shell.dll" file on a tech website. Copied the shell.dll file to my
laptop following tech instructions. Word 97 worked fine except for the
present "font" problem I'm now having.

Maybe the "shell.dll" file recently replaced on my laptop was not compatible
with Windows XP?

Please help. Thank you.

Yes, all text/combo boxes display only the first letter/number and continue
to do so even after making a selection from the full name in the list below.
I have no Compatibility Option to turn on/off in my
Tools/Opitons/Compatibility (am I missing something?).

I do not find a "Windows 9x Compatibility mode" choice on my Word 97. Am I
on the wrong path?

This is a WindowsXP setting: Start, All Programs, Accessories, Program
Compatibility Wizard.

Either use the Program Compatibility Wizard as Terry described or:

- Search for WinWord.exe
- Right-click WinWord.exe and select Properties
- Select the Compatibility tab
- Turn off "Run this program in compatibility mode for:"

Please see my reply in this same thread for exact steps.
(Background leading to present problem:) Laptop purchased with

Office/Word 2003.

The file format for Word documents has not changed since Word 97 so
there really is no such thing as "Word 97" or "Word 2003" documents.
They are just Word documents.

Typically if you have more than one version installed the last version
you use will become the 'registered' version. So if you double-click a
document, regardless of the version it was created in, the registered
version of Word will start and load the document.

There have been a *lot* of enhancements and corrections made since
Word 97. Other than the file format is there another reason you don't
want to use Word 2003? I have all of the Word versions installed and I
don't use Word 97 unless I have to and that is rare. :)
Began having problems working with Word 97: error messages like

Maybe the "shell.dll" file recently replaced on my laptop was not
compatible
with Windows XP?

Perhaps, since this is a Windows System file. For future reference,
when it comes to Windows Systems files it's not a good idea to
download them from websites unless you know the exact version/modified
date you need. If the Compatibility settings for Word isn't the
problem then this would be the next area to investigate.

Okay. Let me try taking off the Windows 9x Coompatibility mode, deleting and
reinstalling my printer driver, again. Tks, again.

I ran the Program Compatibiltiy Wizard. Looks good; font names have
reappeared (instead of the first letter, only), and "Envelope option"
settings have returned. Now I'll delete and reinstall the printer driver.
Thank you very much for helping me.
