Equipment resource & downtime

What would be the best way to assign a piece of equipment as a resource along
with other resources (personnel/machine) and track its downtime? In other
words, when a task is slipping due to the equipment being down both personnel
and the equipment will reflect 0 hrs actual work, but I need to differentiate
to show the 0 hrs actual work for a given day was due to the equipment and
show how long the equipment was down.

Hi,

Try this as an idea...

1. Create the equipment as a resource

2. Create a separate task for the equipment in parallel with the tas
for the people (i.e. same duration, predecessors, successors). Assig
people to the people task, and the equipment to the equipment task.

3. When the equipment is not available update its calendar to show th
days it is not working. This will make the equipment task longer tha
the person task.

4. Open the fields for STOP and RESUME. For the person task, enter th
STOP and RESUME dates to coincide with when the equipment is no
available. This will split the person task to show their down time. (Th
people task's start and finish should now be the same as the equipmen
task as a check.)

Good Luck!

Thanks Matthew:

Unfortunately, and I forgot to mention this, the task is recurring. So if I
change the calendar for each down day, it pushes the recurring task out
towards the next consecutive recurring task. I need a way to still record
the down time, yet not move the recurring task. An example would be a
construction project with a recurring task of weekly rubbish removal. Part
of the trash removers’ job (hypothetically speaking), is to compact and bale
certain rubbish, and the equipment is supplied by the developer. Now on top
of this, the project manager (that’s me) is responsible for tracking the
performance of the trash remover. He comes on week 1 as scheduled, and the
compacter he is supplied is broke down. He is not at fault, he was on
schedule (regarding tracking performance). He leaves the site to go on to
other jobs, and the rubbish piles up. Week ones’ task for the compactor is
gone, lost. All will start over week 2, when hopefully the compactor will be
up and running. In the meanwhile, the down time of the compactor needs to be
tracked. If I change the calendar to exemptions for the compactor it will
move week ones’ task out; what I need is to show the task where it stood with
0% completion, and the compactor with say 20 hours of down time for a given
week.

Hi Nick,

If you have a recurring task (tasks are fixed duration) and the machin
is assigned to the tasks, when the machine is down just make the Work 0
but do not change the duration or date of the task.
You can use the same recurring task for the supervisor, or a differen
recurring task. The point is you make the work zero, and do not chang
the duration. You can also use the Task Usage View or Resource Usag
View to adjust the days when no work is done.

If you baseline this recurring task, then you can compare the baselin
to actual as a history of when the machine was down.
