Error -192

B

Bob Groethe

My wife and I are still getting error -192 while using Entourage from our
respective accounts (G4 running 10.3.2 with Fast User Switching enabled).
Entourage freezes and the 6 panes in the upper left becoming a grid pattern
during mouse-over, requiring a Force Quit.

We just experienced a flurry of these in the last 4 days under both users,
whether only one person was logged on or both.

This is the same report as several others over the last month - just wanted
to make sure others know it is still a vexing problem that persists
regardless whether we rebuild the DB, etc.

Most common cause of this error is that you have either a schedule or a mail
rule running a script AND you haven't kept your Office installation up to
date. The script file model changed with a recent OS update, and scripts
saved in the new 'data fork only' format were not recognised by Entourage.
This was fixed with a patch from MS.

Visit <http://www.microsoft.com/mac/> and check that you have installed all
the latest updates.

Thanks for your quick reply Barry!

Within a few days of upgrading to Panther on Nov. 12, I scanned this
newsgroup and found the advice about ensuring the 10.1.5 Office update was
in place. We were on 10.1.4, so I applied the update and reported this to
the newsgroup on Dec. 1, 03.

Diane Ross replied on Dec. 1 mentioning the possibility of a script issue:
--
"The script could not be run. An error has occurred(-192)"
This was fixed in the update Office 10.1.2

The -192 error is a problem with a file's resource fork, and so could apply
in more than one scenario. Where scripts are involved this is usually
because they're trying to run one of Jaguar's data fork scripts in a pre-SR1
Entourage.
--

Since the script error was fixed in Office update 10.1.2, and since we have
had that in place for before going to Panther, scripting or scheduling
doesn't _seem_ to be the problem. In summary...

We have never seen any text about a script error, just 'Error -192'.
repaired permissions repeatedly, but to no avail.
ensured there is only one MS Database Daemon running.
ensured Office Notifications are off before any DB rebuild.
experienced the problem whether one or both users are logged in.
heard that a user tried an Archive Install, but the problem remains.

It seems that enabling Fast User Switching is a common denominator for
everyone who has posted about Error -192 since upgrading to Panther. Also, I
should add it _seems_ another common denominator is that Safari is also
running.

Diane suggested we turn off Fast User Switching and see if the problem
persists. Unfortunately, my wife and I must share this Mac throughout the
day and need to use this feature. Otherwise, our productivity would take a
big hit.

Any ideas will be appreciated!

OK, thanks for the feedback.

The starnge thing is that I have fast user switching enabled and Safari is
pretty well always running (as is entourage). I haven't seen the -192
problem before (at least, not since the problem with scripts). There must be
other factors at work.

-192 is a problem with a file's resource fork. Most likely files toi be
involved are the database and Microsoft preference files.

First step - try a database rebuild. Quit entourage and all other microsoft
apps. Then, restart entourage while holding down the option key. Keep the
option key held down until entourage is displaying the rebuild screen.
Choose the first rebuild option (typical rebuild?)

If that doesn't fix the issue, it is unlikely that an advanced rebuild will
be effective. In this case, quit entourage (and all office apps) again and
try removing & stuffing the 'Microsoft' folder in ~/Library/Preferences.
Make sure that the original is trashed and the trash emptied if you don't
have stuffit set to delete originals on stuffing.

How does that do? Please report back.

Barry - are you suggesting stuffing the Microsoft folder as a way to keep it
for backup, if needed, but keep it invisible to the OS while a new Microsoft
folder is created during Office startup? Please advise...

Thanks!

I appreciate your persistence regarding the -192 problem...my
symptoms are identical to yours. Regrettably I do not have a solution
yet but have even gone as far as to do a full reinstall of Office V.x and I
still get the problem. A "force quit" and a re-opening of Entourage
seems to do the trick until the next full boot up (not a solution but
rather a band aid). One possibility that may be causing the problem
may be something to do with the"options" setting on your Email
accounts. I have mine set to keep messages on the server for 1 day
before deleting...that way I can go to the verizon/bellatlantic web site
and block domains of junk before it reaches me via Entourage. It
seems POSSIBLY as though keeping my options set this way causes my
-192 error and a graying of all the panes. I'd be interested as to how
your account options are set and any additional feedback from the
Microsoft gurus. Sorry I was a bit long winded here.
Regards,
Ed

Hi Ed,

I am very curious if you have Fast User Switching enabled? So far, that
seems to be a common denominator for everyone on 10.3 who gets error -192
and already has the latest Office updates installed.

I did this for both users of Entourage on our G4. So far, no -192 for either
of us. Will report again next week.

Our Email account Options are set to default values - nothing is checked.

Edward Weil

No..fast user switching is not on..although my wife & I both use this G4
iMac, no need for separate accounts.

Will try the stuffit routine...but I received some advice to trash the
folder and the entourage prefs w/out stuffing..and that did
nothing...but I'll keep on trying...not a big problem..just a pesky one.

Hi Bob...bad news. I stuffed the Microsoft folder...trashed it and then
reopened Entourage. Everything was fine the rest of the night.
Today..my wife booted up and Entourage opened (which I have set to
open in the startup options) and as my wife tried to delete the 1st
Email...gray panes and error -192. A force quit and restart and
everything has been fine since. Actually what I wrote to you yesterday, I
was previously told to trash the folder ans the Entourage plist...did
both, even reinstalled everything...still the "bug" is there...c'mon
Microsoft gurus..ya gotta have an answer somewhere!!!! :) let me know
what happens w/your Entourage...regards,

Ed

OK..I tried it again..I stuffed the Microsoft folder and the entourage
plist. Put them all in the trash and then restarted before I opened
Entourage again...so far OK...but I'll see tomorrow after the 1st boot up
of the day. Will keep you posted.

Hi Ed,

Two more details - did you turn off Office Notifications before stuffing the
folder, etc.? Also, did you empty the trash?

So far, another good day (knock on wood) for us with no -192. May you
experience the same!

Hi Bob..thanlks for the add'l info..no I had not done everything and
again this a.m. I got the error. I have now followed your instructions
fully:
1) Turned off notifications
2) Pulled the Microsoft Folder and the Entourage Plist
3) stuffed them both w/delete originals after stuffing "on"
4) trashed everything and emptied trash
5) completely shut down & then restarted
6) performed an advanced rebuild (just for the heck of it) as I opened
Entoutage for the 1st time...
so far...all is OK...but time will tell and I'll keep you posted.

Unrelated issue? I discovered today that my Norton Anti Virus version 8
does not work w/Panther and I needed to update to version 9.0 which I
have done (available at their web site by download). Could 8.0 have
been causing the error? Doubtful but thought it worth bringing up in
case you too have NAV and are still on the old version.

More tomorrow...

2/1/04...so far all is OK with Entourage. I booted up this a.m. and did
not have a problem. I had no mail so I sent myself one from my
company Email address (a different Email program) and it came through
with no problems, and reading/deleting went fine.

So I am now a whole 24 hours w/out an error -192...I'll stop typing
now...don't want to jinx it. More tomorrow.

It is with a little sadness that I must report an error -192 that my wife
received this afternoon. After following Barry's instructions carefully to
trash the Microsoft folder, etc., we went for one week until this -192.

She was using Safari to visit a Website listed in an email, and was prompted
for her email address. When she clicked to transmit her address, an error
window popped up with "Javascript I'm sorry. This email address seems
wrong. Please check prefix and '@' sign."

She closed the error window, closed Safari, then got the -192 as soon as she
returned to Entourage. A Force Quit and she was okay. BTW, I happened to be
logged on to my user with Entourage open at the same time (Fast User
Switching), but that may not matter.

Ed - best wishes on going more than a week before you see a -192!

So what exactly is the problem?

There was some faulty code in the web page (I'd guess that whoever wrote
that webpage did not use a standards-compliant code for all browsers but
instead used some HTML editor coding that may only work in IE) so it
attempted to do something illegal in your default email editor, which
happens to be Entourage. That would mess up Entourage, or whatever your
default browser happened to be.

You should complain to the company hosting the website. Tell them to use
standards-compliant Javascript that will work in all browsers (such as
Safari), and pass on the error to them. Of course, you may discover that
they couldn't care less about Mac users using Safari. If it works OK in IE
Mac, I guess you'd have a workaround.

In any case, there's not much Entourage can do if it's sent an illegal
instruction by Safari.

happened to me too...oh well. will keep trying options and see if I can
figure something out...Fast switching is off..but I did try it once weeks
ago...maybe i need to trash the fast user switching plist as well (if there is
one)..worst case is live with it or switch to Apple Mail..but not giving up
yet...will keep u posted

Paul..not trying to speak for Bob but the problem being addressed is a
continuing Entourage problem of an error -192 and graying of the
panes on the left causing one to have to force quit and restart. Please
read this entire thread plus the new note I posted today on Page
1...maybe you have an answer to the Entourage mystery that so far
continues to plague us...it's a minor problem but a pesky one

Thank you. Ed

Bob..I tried something different..I turned off my file vault and
unencrypted my home files. Will let you know if that has any effect.

Interesting that I am having this problem with my G4 iMac...but not my
G3 iBook. Hmmm....the mystery continues.

Hi Paul,

The problem is the decline in productivity due to the prevalence of error
-192's, the need to Force Quit and Restart.

I think it may be premature to conclude the root cause of the problem is as
you describe. Many others have reported -192's here, but I don't believe
anyone else has noticed or reported any Javascript error just before getting
-192.

However, I thank you for sharing this theory - you are the first to do so.
It _may_ prove to be the root cause of the -192 errors. Let's hear from
others to see if their experience supports the theory.

I ask anyone who has experienced error -192 to report if they have ever
received this error when Safari is not running at the time of the error. And
if it is running, report exactly what you experienced with Safari just
before the error.

I will give feedback about the offending website to the company in question.

I _think_ my wife and I have received -192 without any browser open, but am
not 100% certain. I will watch closely and report our experiences.

Thanks much... Bob
