hello
I have looked at the older thread of this discussion (started in 2007) but it led me nowhere.
I am having this issue with getting this error message 3259 when i try to send email. the message says " an operation on the server timed out. the server maybe down, overloaded or there may be too much net traffic" . Am receiving mail ok though.

My ISP says the server is working fine, evidenced by the fact i can receive emails ok and i can browse the internet ok

Any suggestions anyone???

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

You can try re-entering info.
You can delete account and create a new one.
Using copy/paste can result in an extra space being added. Type carefully.
Check your Keychain for corruption.

Reset your Account

You'll probably find some simple error like an added space that is causing
the problem.

Thanks for the above advice Diane. I have tried resetting my account but still encountering the same problem. i notice i am having trouble sending only certain email messages, but when i test other emails it works ok.
when you refer to the "simple error of an added space"- what do you mean? Added space where?

Also Diane have noticed that if i compose a new message then the email sends ok (most times) but if i try and reply to an email- then it doesnt send, but instead it's stuck in my outbox and i get the error message as described. does that tell me what the problem is???

Do these message contain attachments? Large messages will often fail.
Exactly what problem do you have and is there any common thread like
recipient, attachment, account?

Added space where?

Many users will copy a password or other data when creating the account.
It's easy to copy an extra space.

Usually replying gets past a problem you might have like an incorrect
address. Do you have an example message you could "Forward as Attachment" to
me to check?
