Email Client: pop

I am a premium Hotmail user and have recently moved from DAV (which worked perfectly) to POP. The POP worked for a few days, but whilst I am now able to receive messages, I am unable to send messages and receive the error message -3259 "An operation on the server timed out. The server may be down, overloaded, or there may be too much net traffic."

Any help gratefully received.

The error might just indicate there are server problems.

Compare your account setup to this example:

Setup Windows Live Hotmail in Entourage as a POP account

1. If you can receive but not send then you have a bad SMTP configuration
2. If you can send but not receive you have a bad POP or IMAP configuration

Many thanks. Tried SMTP port 587, which did not work. Reverted back to default and re-input details for SMTP. It now works...

Port 587 works for sending from my dsl at home, but not from my office. Ports 110 and 25 don't help me receive at work or home. can anyone help? what settings should I be manipulating?

That's actually not that helpful. I have changed the ports and my other information (username, server name etc are correct) what else can I do?

I kept adjusting the port settings and finally got inbound and outbound to work from home on my DSL. But it still did not work at the office. So I called our Help Desk and they confirmed that they block all inbound and outbound ports. Apparently many companies do this.

So why then did WLH make this change?

Why essentially kick me and others off your service for most of the day when this is when I use it the most? I will not go back to using web based hotmail so my options are 1. don't use that account very much or 2. switch to another provide altogether.

I would really like WLH to come up with a viable solution to this problem.

You asked "what settings should I be manipulating?" and I gave you the info.

Send feedback to Microsoft. This is not an an official MS forum.

When working in Office, you can use the ³Send Feedback² option under the
Help menu in all of the Office applications or visit

If you want the same type of setup, get a Gmail IMAP account.
