Error 'cannot save due to file permissions'

Hi,

When my colleagues at work try saving Word (XP) documents anywhere, they get
the error 'Word cannot complete the save due to a file permission error
<filename>' - there's a KB somewhere which I've now misplaced which says to
update to latest SP. However, I've now done this and still they get the
error. If I log in (as admin), I don't get it - So I know it's to do with
the permissions. (There's another KB relating to index server, but it isn't
running on some of the drives in question)

I've already assigned 'Domain Users' as 'Power Users' as is normally the
problem with Office products, but this doesn't solve the error. I think I
discovered this afternoon (unreliable temporary solution) that if I add the
actual User to the Power User group as well as 'Domain Users', it works for
that person, but I don't want to, and shouldn't have to, add all x000 pupils
and staff to the group manually on every machine. (//domainname/username ->
Power Users)

Does anyone have any idea how to solve this? We need to upgrade all
machines to XP to be compatable with the admin software, which NEEDS to be
upgraded next week (SIMS.net if anyone out there's in education...) So far
only the data managers and myself have XP, everyone else is on 97.

TIA

Hello Peter,

I upgraded to XP some months ago and have had continual problems saving
files in Office, namely your file permission error. I'm not on any Network
though, just a simple home PC user. An associated problem is each time I hit
"Save as" a temp file (.tmp) file is created which is crowding all my
document folders (and I can't delete them; receiving a message that another
person is using the file - try later!!!). A workaround is to reboot then
delete all these garbage tmp files.
My question is have you had any luck with the file permission error case.
Please keep to words of one syllable as I haven't yet achieved nerd status.

Cheers, Jorge
