Error downloading messages

Using OL2003, I get this error message whenever I download mail:

===
Task 'mydomain.com - Receiving' reported error (0x8004210C) : 'Some messages
you marked for download are no longer available on the server.'
===

Perhaps due to this error (though I am not sure), each time I download mail,
the server is not wiped clean and I end up getting the same message twice,
thrice ...

How does one solve this?

If you have an AV or firewall configured to scan incoming/outgoing email,
this can cause what you're seeing. The AV/firewall basically "interrupts"
the handshake between Outlook and the mail server, especially on slow hookups
so the server never receives the "okay, got that one, please send the next"
command from Outlook so you get a loop with the server thinking it has not
downloaded the message.

It can also happen if you have an unrealistic send/receive interval set up
and the accounts step on each other trying to comply with your schedule. I
have mine set for 10 minutes. I wouldn't personally consider setting it for
less. You have to give all systems time to get the job done that you've
requested of them.

Kathleen,

Thanks very much for your response and your suggestions regarding the
handshake problem and too brief a send/receive interval.

However, in this case, I suspect none of the above are responsible for my
problem. You see, I regularly clean up messages from my server manually by
dumping all messages into an archive file and thus making space available on
the mail server. So it is possible, that the messages are really no longer
on the server.

The question is how can I delete these headers from my Inbox altogether, so
that OL does not make any attempt to download them?

Any ideas (short of creating a whole new OL profile and starting from
scratch)?

Thanks

I got myself this message when I:

1. Downloaded headers only in Outlook (because I was using a slow &
unreliable internet connection)
2. Marked some headers for processing (both for downloading and deleting) in
Outlook
3. Went online with a webmail tool and deleted some messages (because since
my connection was slow and unreliable I decided to “help†by deleting spam
online).
4. Ask Outlook to send and receive the SMT account

It seems that when you delete messages that Outlook want to process, it goes
bananas and doesn’t consider the mail processing (SMTP session) successful.
It not only gives you this error message but it also keeps in the server even
the mail messages it does download successfully.

My workaround was to manually delete all the marked headers and then ask
Outlook to process them (it marks them differently).
