Error in activating Office 2003 from trial version

I repeatedly get a nonspecific error trying to activate my Office 2003 trial
version to Office 2003 Student and Teacher Edition. It doesn't specify what
the error is, but will not activate. I downloaded the trial version from
Microsoft, liked it and can't convert as noted above

you should uninstall the trial and launch setup from the CD.

No, you won't. Uninstalling Office does *NOT* delete data files. You will
only lose your email if you search for the .pst files (which are hidden) and
delete them manually.
