error message: file in use, make a copy?

I get a message whenever I open a file or document. It says
c:\...(doc name) is being used by (my name). Do you want to make a copy?

I have windows XP 2002 version. How can I fix this?

Did you install some virus scanning software that is scanning the
documents when you open them?

No, I've gotten that type of message the entire time I've had this computer
(1 yr old)
Any other suggestions?

Ok, will ask it a different way. Does the computer have virus scanning
software installed that is scanning the documents when you open them?
