Error Message: (IN-USE) mail drop busy

Version: 2008
Operating System: Mac OS X 10.5 (Leopard)
Processor: Intel
Email Client: pop

I regularly receive the error message: (IN-USE) mail drop busy in my error log.

Entourage also locks up often when I try to pull messages from the POP server by clicking 'Send and Receive'. After locking up for a minute or two, I receive an error message that 'Mail could not be received at this time. Invalid username/password or security setting may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password'.

Any help would be appreciated.

I regularly receive the error message: (IN-USE) mail drop busy in my

This sounds like a message coming from your E-mail service provider. The
"mail drop busy" part of the message means that your mailbox on the
server is open by some other process. This could be an antivirus scan
running on the server checking for problems or possibly a backup
process. It shouldn't happen on a regular basis.

I suggest you troubleshoot this by seeing if you get the same message
with another E-mail client such as Apple's Mail or Mozilla's
Thunderbird. If you continue receiving the message or having problems
connecting with those then the problem is with the server and you'll
need to work with your service provider. If everything works OK then
possibly your Entourage Database is corrupt.
Entourage also locks up often when I try to pull messages from the
POP server by clicking 'Send and Receive'. After locking up for a
minute or two, I receive an error message that 'Mail could not be
received at this time. Invalid username/password or security setting
may be incorrect. Would you like to try re-entering your password'.

This could be a related problem.

First, make sure your Office installation is completely up-to-date by
checking for updates under the Help menu. The latest version of Office
2008 is 12.1.5.

Quit Entourage and then verify that your keychain is OK by opening the
Keychain Access utility found in /Applications/Utilities. Run Keychain
Access --> Keychain First Aid. Test Entourage.

If that doesn't work then search for the password item in Keychain
Access that corresponds to your mail account and delete it. Test
connecting again in Entourage.

If that doesn't work then you may have Database corruption. Launch
Entourage with the Option key held down and follow the instructions in
the Database Utility application to Verify and possibly Repair your
Database.

Hope this helps!

In addition to checked the Keychain as Bill suggested, it's possible that
you were bitten by a bug for the 12.1.5 update. See this article for
solutions:

If the bug is your problem it would have started immediately after updating
top 12.1.5.
