error message when receiving in outlook 2003

When I set up outlook 2003 with my earthlink account, the connections all tested fine. But when I click send and receive, it prompts for my password and then I get the following error message and no messages are received:


Task 'pop.earthlink.net - Receiving' reported error (0x800CCC92) : 'Your e-mail server rejected your login. Verify your user name and password in your account properties. Under Tools, click E-mail accounts. The server responded: -ERR syntax error'

Sent messages go out fine. Any ideas what is causing the error message?
