error message when sending email to a distribution list

I am trying to send an email to a distribution list in Outlook, and I keep getting the message

Task 'Tsginc - Cruzio - Sending' reported error (0x8004210B) : 'The operation timed out waiting for a response from the sending (SMTP) server. If you continue to receive this message, contact your server administrator or Internet service provider (ISP).

WHy? WE have DSL, this should not be a problem. I have even broken the list down to 50 names.
