Error message

SK Anderson

I can't get any Office 97 Pro. application to open. Word
and Excel give: "This program has performed an illegal
operation and will be shut down. Details: Winword casued
an invalid page fault in module: MSO97.DLL at
017f:3081f5dd or 017f:30778f09, or Excel caused an invalid
page fault in module: MSO97.DLL at 017f:3081f463, or OSA
caused an invalid page fault in module MSO97.DLL at
017f:3082bd9e. Powerpoint just locks up and I have to
Ctrl, Atl Delete and End Task.

A friend ran Norton Utilities and "fixed" all that it
found. We then uninstalled Office 97 and reinstall. Still
the same problem. I was going to try MS for on-line help,
but I need the Product ID which I can't get to because I
can't get past the above message.

For what it's worth, I believe that this problem began
when I tried to copy text from a website and paste it into
Word. The CPU made some unusal sounds and the error
message came up.
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sherry

Hi, SK:

Try these steps:

Uninstall Office 97.

Completely remove the remainder of Office 97 files using the steps in this
article:

http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;158658

Search your computer for any copies of mso97.dll that may be in different
folders. Rename any you find.

Delete the files in your temp folder (c:\windows\temp)

Run a Scandisk on your computer

Run a disk defragmentation

Reinstall Office 97.

Install the Office 97 updates which you can get from
http://office.microsoft.com.
