When double-clicking a Word, Excel or PDF attachment to an email, my users
frequently get an error. The error title bar reads "Microsoft Outlook" and
the body states "The system cannot find the file specified." The error only
occurs when the application whose document is being launched isn't already
open. The attachment is double-clicked, the application starts to load, then
Outlook displays the error message and processing of the request halts. This
error never occurs when the application is already open.
It seems to be a timing issue, but I can't find anything in the registry or
elsewhere that supports this theory.
We're running Office 2000 on Windows XP SP2. Interestingly, this error does
not occur on our Windows Server 2003 Terminal Server. I'm unsure of the
service pack level on the server.
