Everyline has an (unwanted) bullet

For sone reason, a document which was created in outline, now has every
single line preceeded by a bullet in addition to those bullets I meant
to be there. Even the line spaces have the unwanted bullets. No amount
of toggling bullets / no bullets seems to get rid of them.

Any idea how it happened and how I might get rid of them?

I'd bet you have modified the style by accident.
format->style->modify
If bullets are not set on the current style, look at the style it is
based on and so on.
