excel 2008 for Mac from a lifetime PC Microsoft Excel user convert

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel can not enter a number into a cell without having the number changed after pressing return,, eg enter "3000" into a cell and then press return and the cell presents "30" any ideas as to why

Excel -> Preferences -> Display this number of decimal places. Please uncheck this box.
