excel and front page

An Excel Spreadsheet is not a program; it's a file. What exactly are your
requirements? In other words, what are the business objectives that your
application should fulfill?

I'm having a hell-of-a-time geting an excel program to interactively work
properly on front page. The program has combo boxes, comment boxes and
protected cells.
The boxes do not show up and I have to unprotect the program in order to get
it on the web (leaving critical cells left unprotected). Any ideas on how to
get the program to transfer to the web as it was written. I'm kinda new to
web design so be elementary with your answer.
Thanks,
John

I'm trying to put an interactive workbook on my web site, so that I can
acccess it from anyones computer. I'm in the HVAC business and go into homes
all the time to measure up and perform load calculations to determine
equipment size and operating cost. It's easier to use the customer's
computer than to lug arround a laptop and printer. my calculation template
is written in excel but not everyone has excel on their computer.
Therefore I thought it would be best to have the calculation on a web site.

If you come to my house and ask me to use
my computer to perform your job, I'm going
to tell you "see ya later" and find another contractor.
Run your template in excel on your laptop and
take your laptop with you.
I'll gladly lend you an outlet for power, but you aren't touching my
computer.

And what makes you think they have Excel or even an internet connection
(required to run Excel workbooks in web pages)

IMHO - be professional and bring you own equipment

Hi John,

Unfortunately, as I said, an Excel file is not the Excel application, and
the .xls file is useless without it. You should also be aware that when you
make a file available on your web site, and a user opens it in their
browser, they are not opening the original file, but a copy of it, which the
browser downloads. In other ways, a web site doesn't go 2 ways. If all you
need is the functionality of the cells, it should be fine to download the
file into Excel. However, if you expect the user to be able to save the file
back to the server, that is impossible. And again, keep in mind that the
user's computer must have Excel in order to view Excel documents.
