Excel: Can I use Fill_Color Attribs to count elements?

In Excel 2000: I'm needing to simply count elements based on the Fill Color
of a series of cells. I know I can use the countif() function but haven't
been able to find a list of system variables and their corresponding
elements.

Thanks Chip, been out of the loop too long and taking me a bit to get back on
