Excel extract not visible in slide

i have PP2003, Office 2003 and XP. I pasted an extract from an Excel
spreadsheet into a PP slide. It appeared without problem. Later, when
I opened the file again, the outline of the extract was visible, plus
a small white box containing a red cross.

When I right click Worksheet Object/Edit the spreadsheet appears. When
right click Worksheet Object/Edit the spreadsheet appears again. The
data is obviously there but I cannot get it to appear on the slide. Is
it some setting in Options that is causing the problem?
