Excel startup bug: Run-time error '76'??

S

Steve Conover

Help, please.

Yesterday, Excel started giving me error messages whenever I
start it up. I uninstalled Office 2000, reinstalled it, and I
still get the same error.

Here is what happens. MS Visual Basic displays a dialog box that
says:
Run-time error '76':
Path not found

When I hit the debug button, it highlights (in yellow) the
following line of code:
lengthOfFile = Filelen(registryValue)

What should I do to fix this annoying problem?

Steve

Hi Steve,

A Runtime error means there is an error in a third party macro rather
than Excel.

Try running Excel in Safe Mode. For this go to Start/Run and run the
following command:

Excel.exe /s

Note that there is a space before the forward slash.

If everything works fine in Safe Mode, then the problem could be due
to an add-in Go to Tools/Add-ins and uncheck all the add-ins. Then
start Excel without using the /s switch. If this solves the problem
then enable the add-ins one-by-one, restarting Excel each time, to
find the offending add-in.

If the problem still exists then go to Tools/Options/General and make
sure that the 'Alternate Startup file location' is blank.

If this doesn't work, move all the files out of your XLStart folder.

Can this same error and cause also apply to MS Word?

I get "76 Path not Found" when trying to launch a third party CRM app to insert Database fields into a Word template.

Thx,
Peter
