Exit design mode when opening doc with option button

I have a word document whereby I added some option button from the Control toolbox. I noticed that when I open the word document, it is always in design mode and hence I cannot click on the options button. I need to click on the "exit design mode" button before I can click on the button. How do I set the document such that when I open it, it will not be in design mode and hence allowing me to click on the options button straight away. Thanks.

Which version of Word do you have? And what is your macro security setting (Tools7Macro/Security)?

Try saving your document as a template. That will prevent design mod
from being active when you open the document
