Exporting data

Someone, please help.

I have a large body of email I wanted to save on a CD.
Rightly or wrongly, I thought I could use the "export"
function to do this -- expecially when the "Help" feature
told me that I could export to Word.

So, I highlighted the mail folder I wanted to export,
pulled down the File menu and chose Export. Imagine my
surprise when Word was not among the listed options!

I decided to go ahead and perform the procedure anyway,
just to see what I got. I chose "comma separated values"
format for Windows.

Something happened.

It only took me 20 minutes to find the file it had
created, which turned out to be an Excel file. What
little data was in it was mysterious.

I have a few questions:

(1) if I want to put precious emails in off-line storage
so that they are accessible with another program (not
restricted to Outlook to access), will Outlook allow me
to do this? If so, what function do I use?

(2) why did the Help screen tell me I could export to
Word, then the program not allow me to do so? Word was
not listed among the permissible options.

Thanks.

The better approach is to simply copy your PST file to a CD.

It's not really an Excel file. It's a text file with comma-separated
values. The file association in the registry associates .csv files with
Excel, but Notepad can read them just fine.

Tab- or comma-separated value files are the most portable, but reading any
format not Outlook-specific with some other application will be problematic.
At the very least, attachments will be jeopardized.

Outlook 2003, at any rate, does not list Word as an export type. I don't
believe OL2000 does either.
