External Graphics into PowerPoint

I use other programs (e.g., Corel, Photoshop, Visio) to
create graphics. Could someone offer rules of thumb for
the different graphics types (e.g., bmp, tif, jpeg, eps)
and offer an explanation for which is best for on-screen
and for paper presentations in PowerPoint?
