external task

In the legend of Gantt chart appears "external task". How can I make a
"normal" task to be external and this to appear in the schedule as different
(colour) from the others?

Thank you,
Dariela

An external task is a task which resides in another project plan.
For example: if you insert a project plan into your existing plan
(insert -> project) and you link a tsak from your original plan with a
task from the inserted plan, the task from your existing plan will show
up as an external task in the original file of the inserted plan.

Be carefull, physically linking project plans is not a best pratice...

Daniela makes an excellent point, though. It is often vital to highlight in
a project plan (particularly when you're dependent on, for example, a client)
to be able to indicate VERY clearly where such dependencies exist. While in
Proj Man practice an external task is something that exists in a different
project, are there plans to make it possible to apply a different format
where External Resource is relied on for delivery of a task automatically?

And does the functionality your link points to (which is detailed for MSP
2000) also work in later versions? I have 2007.

Hello Lee,

Yes, FAQ 31 works in Project 2007 as well.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
