Fading color in background of text

I am trying to figure out how to have the color in the background of some
text fade from darker to lighter across the page. If anyone knows how to do
this or has any suggestions, thank you in advance!

Create an AutoShape behind the text and fill it with a pattern that has this
sort of blend.
