File already in use

I installed my Word 97 on a new computer with Windows
XP. Whenever I open a Word document , I get the
message "<path><document.doc> is in use by <username>. Do
you want to make a copy?" where <path><document.doc> is
the current document being opened and <username> is the
only user of the computer (and the computer is not
networked). I can hit cancel and the document opens
properly. How can I get rid of the annoying message.
