File Conversion Box When Attempting to Open Older Word Docs

This has been previously addressed, but after trying the suggested remedies,
I get nowhere. Here's the problem, again:

When I attempt to open a Word Document from either the Desktop or in My
Documents, a dialogue box appears with the heading File Conversion - followed
by the file name which ends in .doc. Below this it reads 'Select the
encoding that makes your document readable and three options; Windows
(Default); MS-DOS and Other encoding.

COMMENTS: It appears the problem is only occurring on my older saved
documents (2005 and earlier).

If this has something to do with Word automatically compressing older files,
please tell me how to turn off that function. I've searched Word Help, and I
cannot determine how to turn-off that automatic compression (if that's the
problem).

Thanks for your help and patience!

Compression sis a Windows feature and has nothing to do with Word. Open
Windows Explorer and the older compressed documents should display in a
different colour by default IF there are set to be compressed. However, that
colour setting can be turned off in Tools, Options in Explorer, so because
they are not a different colour does not mean they are uncompressed.
Compression can be turned off by selecting the file/files, right-clicking,
and selecting Properties, Advanced. Clear the Compression check box.

However, it seems unlikely to be compression causing the problem as Windows
will decompress on-the-fly when compressed documents are accessed.. Which
version of Word are you using?

Terry: You're correct, it appears compression is not causing my problems.

I find it strange that the only Word docs affected are older. I've saved
Word docs since 2004, using Word 2003, and never had a problem retrieving
them in the past.

Help!

Thanks, again, for your time!

As an experiment, you might click Tools > Options > General, and clear the
Confirm Conversion at Open check box.

If Word can, in fact, convert and open the document on the fly without your
help, this will at least make the File Conversion dialog box stop appearing.
