File Error when saving word doc

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Power PC When I attempt to save a document in .docx, regardless, to documents or desktop I get the following:

File error has occurred. Check your network connections or check to see if your disk is properly inserted and not defective.

I am not on a network and have no idea why a disk would be necessary.

Is there a setting somewhere that must be changed?

Most likely an update issue;

Update Office to 12.2.4
Update OS X to 10.6.3 (using the Combo update from Apple Downloads)
Run Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions

Thanks, I should have mentioned that I am running all new software and operating system that are completely updated. I found a quick fix. I chose to save the docs in .doc instead of .docx. Its a quick fix for the moment.

Well, I'm afraid that really isn't a "fix" at all :) It's more like not
eating because of a bad tooth. There's no legitimate reason for you not to
be able to save in OXML format if the Mac is working as it should.

Writing files to disk is the function of the operating system - That's where
the error message is being generated from. If OS X is having a problem
writing *any* supported file format it is an indication that something is
definitely wrong. If it isn't addressed effectively there could be other
consequences yet to come, including disk failure altogether. I don't mean to
be an alarmist, but just because something is "new" doesn't necessarily mean
it's working perfectly or that everything it relies on is as it should be.
Nor does it mean that the hardware on which it's running doesn't have some
flaws.

You don't mention having run the Repair Disk Permissions routine, so I'd
highly recommend that you do so, then restart your Mac. If that doesn't
correct the problem it would be a good idea to do as suggested in #2 of my
previous reply even though already have the OS updated to 10.6.3 - The
update is probably what was delivered by Apple's Software Update, which is
not as comprehensive as the Combos available from the Apple Downloads site.

You were right on the money. I ran Repair Disk Permission and all is well, I was able to save a Word doc properly.

Thank you!
