File Locations

I wonder if someone can help me . I want word to point to a document in it
as soon as I open this, but I have tried to do this with no success. The
problem is if I look in my documents I can see the document in word format
but as soon as I enter the path in word the folder has nothing in it for
that path . I wonder what I do next. TIA

Make sure you have the "Files of type" dropdown in the Open Dialog box set
to "Word documents". You might want to explain (again) what it is exactly
that you are trying to do. This does make sense - "I want word to point to
a document in it as soon as I open this".

Ok sorry . When I go to file locations to change the way word opens I Clic
on 'modify' and select the file in my documents but when my documents
appears in the 'look in' menu it shows there is nothing in the MY DOCUMENTS
folder .

Then that means either of the following:

1. There are no Word documents in the My Documents folder, or,

2. Your "Files of type" dropdown arrow in the dialog box is NOT set to "Word
documents".

When you open Word, click "File", "Open", on the "Open Dialog" box towards
the bottom left is a dropdown arrow that shows the files of type you are
looking for in this folder. If it is set to something other than "All
Files" or "Word documents", you won't see your Word documents listed.

What is in the dropdown box labeled, "Files of type"?

You can't get Word to open a document that way. The File Locations tab
allows you to select only the *folder* where Word will open. If you want to
start Word with a specific file open, then you have to modify the command
line. For the general idea, see the Help topic "Customize how Word starts"
(Word 2003 and maybe 2002) or "Control what happens when you start Word"
(previous versions). Unfortunately, this topic doesn't include all the
available startup switches. For those, see these articles:

“WD: Word for Windows Startup Switches”

“WD: Word Startup (Command-Line) Switches and Their Purpose”

This is whats strange because I thought the same as you but in FILE>OPEN its

I click the 'modify icon to enter the path the folder name drop down menu is
empty.

Based on Suzanne's response, I now understand what you want to do. Easiest
way is to create a shortcut to your Word document on your Desktop.
