File Locations

Rick B.

Just recently the modify file locations button in Word XP has started to
malfunction. Whenever I click on it from within Word it resets the location
to one specific subfolder within My Documents and won't let me change to
anything else. I have already completely uninstalled and reinstalled Word,
and that did not fix the problem so I suspect it's something to do with the
registry. Any ideas out there? (I'm running a standalone setup with Word XP
and Windows XP Professional).

Thanks

You said your file location is reset to a different directory, try resetting
it by going to Tools > Options > File Locations (tab), under the "File
Locations" heading, select "Documents C:\...\My Documents" listing under
File Types: Location: click the Modify button and navigate to the location
where your documents are and click ok, close.

Thanks Andre but clicking the modify button does nothing--the dialog box
that's supposed to open, doesn't--nothing happens.

Not even close to being an expert, but;

I've found that whenever I have these "Huh.." problems I can usually
solve them by "re-registering" Word, as in;
Go to Start, Run and type

winword /r (Note the space prior to the "/r")

Press enter.
It will appear as though nothing is happening but Word will be
re-registered..

Failures of functions in tools > options are usually an indication of a
corrupt registry data key - see
http://www.gmayor.com/my_toolbars_are_missing.htm. The fix is the same.

Reinstalling rarely achieve anything useful, as the things that cause the
most problems - normal.dot, add-ins and the registry data key are
unaffected.

Thanks Graham but no dice. Absolutely no difference after deleting the data
key.

Is this a standalone computer and are you logged in as an administrator?
Although not a 100% solution, if you want to access a different folder,
don't forget that you can add folders to the PlacesBar in the File Open/Save
dialogs for fast access.

Thanks for replying.

Yes, I'm on a standalone Windows XP Pro box. I guess this is more of a
housekeeping thing because of course I can still choose where to put files
using "save as" but it would be nice to get the program to work as it
should.

The File Locations are saved in normal.dot. It suggest scanning your drive
to make sure that you only have one copy of normal.dot installed and that
there isn't a rogue copy taking precedence over your changes.
