File name length. 8 is NOT enough.

Have an old version (6.0 C) of Office Pro.
"Manufactured for Gateway 2000 by RR Donnelley & Sons".
"Microsoft Windows Compatible"
Is 8 characters the limit for file names?
Are later Office versions the same or do they allow for longer file names?
Thanks.

This is an operating system issue, not Office. Windows filenames may be up
to 255 characters.

Hi Keith,

The file-related dialogs in Word 6.0 couldn't handle long file names
without external help, but every version after that (95, 97, 2000,
2002, and 2003 so far) can.

Here's a copy of a post from MVP Bob Buckland from 1999 on the
subject:

------------------
There are a couple of shareware utilities that can add Long File Name
support to Word 6, one is at http://www.cottonwoodsw.com
Another one or two are in the File downloads at
http://go.compuserve.com/MSOfficeForum search on the Keyword LONG.

Hope that helps,
