File server permissions and Office

Had tried to lock down the root of a share so users can not create files and
folders on the root of the mapped drive. I succeeded in what I wanted, but
then some users got errors when using Excel. Access denied when trying to
create a .tmp file. We found that it was trying to create the .tmp file on
the root of the mapped drive when they were making large changes to an Excel
sheet they opened somewhere on the mapped drive. We had to allow files to be
created at the root to work around this. Of course now users are dumping
files there. Any case....the only think I could find was in MS Support about
how Word uses temp files. It indicated that it is hard coded. Has anyone
else seen this? Is it truely hard coded? Thanks for any information.
