File size decrease after editing

Hi All,
Using MS Project Std 2002.
I edited 2 schedules for a department and noticed when I saved the new
versions that the size of the new files had decreased markedly, from 2.3MB to
600KB, and 1.7mb to 360KB respectively.
I am in the process of testing them, but can't find anything that I deleted;
or functions that don't work.
The nature of the editing I performed were:
- edited the std calendar
- changed all tasks from Fixed Units to Fixed Duration
Is there a utility I can run, or a test to perform to check that the updated
file has not been corrupted, or something to compare the different versions?
Any hints as to what I did, right or wrong?

Kind Regards.........Pratta

When you edit a file, delete tasks or... Project doesn't re-organize the
file, It leaves the old block of memory intact with a flag and adds new
material to the end of the file. So, with constant editing the file size
bloats.

Whenever you Save As or open a file then immediately save, Project does file
house keeping and removes those old file pieces so consolidating the file
and often reducing file sizes noticeably. What you've seen is therefore
expected.

Try opening some other larger and much edited files, then select File, Save
immediately: the file size should shrink with no visible change to the
project data.
