If the image is not wrapped, you can press Alt+F9 to see the field code. If
you see an IncludePicture code, the image is linked. If you see no field
code, it is embedded. Wrapped graphics must be made inline before you can
see the field code even if they are linked.

Free_electron,
Press Alt+F9, if a picture is linked, you will see an Include picture field.
If the picture is embedded you will see the picture.
Be aware that if the picture is floating you will not see the Include
picture field although the picture is linked. You will have to format it so
that it is in-line.
One way to change from an embedded to a linked picture is to right-click the
image and save it choosing Save
Picture As. Then you can reinsert it in your document, Insert - Picture -
From File. Click on the arrow next to the insert button and choose to link.
I do not know of a fast way to do that automatically, but maybe someone else
will have better ideas.

If you have images embedded in (saved within) the document, you can write
them out by saving the document as HTML.

If you have images embedded as editable objects ("Embedded" as in OLE) then
depending on the tool you may be able to double-click to edit, then use the
tool's own toolbar to save a copy to a separate file.
