focal point on picture

I have a single picture of five people in my presentation. I am discussing
the experience of each person an would like to single out the face of each
person as i discuss that person. So as I discuss "x" Only her face would
remain viewable and the rest of the picture would be gone. Then as i go to
"y", only the face of "y" would show. Is this possible?

So i assume you have two pictures. One picture X and another picture Y.

You can set X's custom animation,
using the Entrance effect (preferrably fade in), and set Start to "On Click".

Then on X again, set the Exit effect (preferrably fade out), and set Start
to "On Click".

On Y's custom animation,
using the Entrance effect (fade in), set Start to "With Previous", so that
when you press enter or left click, X will fade out(disappear) while Y will
fade in (appear).

You have several options for this. You can have the whole picture on your
slide with boxes covering up the area of the picture you don't want. You
can use animation to have certain boxes enter (to cover up one face) and
other boxes leave (to reveal another face). You also could make duplicate
slides that have different parts of the picture covered up. You also could
use the cropping tool to have the picture on multiple slides cropped in
different ways.

Similar to what I have said above, you can make use of entrance and exit
effect, with one On Click and the other With Previous.

In addition to what David said: You can also create a PNG-Graphic of a
rectangle in background color of your slide, with an transparent oval in it.
This can cover up the rest of the picture and leave only one face visible.
And it can be moved with animation paths to reveal the next face.

Its not necessary to make a PNG graphic. I have tried it and powerpoint can
do the work. First, make a circle, rectangle or any shapes you want to use,
go to the properties and set the color to No Fill.

Next, set the weight of the Line to 1584 pt (max). This will allows the
circle to covers the whole slide. You can then adjust the size of the inner
circle(the fill-less part).

I guess this is what you want. This one is done using the autoshape, you just
need to set the weight of the line to make a giant circle with a donut hole.
