Footers in XP

I have created a document in XP, and wanted to insert a header/footer. However, no footer box is appearing. I have tried removing section breaks, didn't help, switching between header and footer, header box appeared, but no footer box. I have also tried selecting different first page, but it only gives me a footer on the first page, not the whole document. Even the same as previous section button is not available. Please can anyone help.

This is usually a symptom of document corruption. If you're seeing this on
all new documents, the likelihood is that Normal.dot is damaged. See
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/BlankDocNotBlank.htm for instructions
for renaming it.
