Forcing "text" mode

Victor Hadianto

Hello,

Is it possible to force Microsoft Word in "text" mode? I mean disable all
the formatting (bold, italic, fonts) feature? Almost like making it Notepad
but with the spelling and grammar support.

Thanks,

This is possible (in the literal sense) only in Word 2003, and only if
all the users of the document also have Word 2003. You can restrict
the formatting to a set of styles that you choose, and in the extreme
case you can restrict it to only Normal style. With this protection in
place, Word will also refuse to apply direct formatting.

If the document will be used by people with earlier versions of Word,
though, they will see it as protected against editing of any kind,
which would make it useless to them.

For earlier versions, you could write macros named FileSave and
FileSaveAs, to intercept those commands and force the document to be
saved as text only, discarding any formatting. (See
http://www.word.mvps.org/FAQs/MacrosVBA/InterceptSavePrint.htm for
instructions.) However, if users have macros disabled by a high
security level, these macros wouldn't run.

How about simnply saving the document as plain text? This will strip any
formatting as text doesn't support it.

I interpreted Victor's situation as having a document (or preferably a
template) that other people would use, and he wants to prevent them
from saving in any format other than text. If you can't trust your
users not to insert font formatting, you certainly can't trust them to
remember to save in a non-default format -- hence the macro solution.
