format bars with "squared ends"

How can you format a bar so it doesn't have rounded ends? I've gone to
Fomrat Bar styles and selected the skinny looking squared off bar, and it
shows correctly in the appearance column. But, in the gnatt view, the ends
are still rounded. Even treid to open a new project with just one task and
format the bar, same thing. I know it can be done becuase someone just sent
me a pdf of a gnatt veiw with squared off bars, but I just cant find out how.
