FP 2003 FTP Publish Server Error: The URL

N

newbie

Hi,
I'm trying to publish from the website to a new opened FP website on my
harddrive, so that I can have a backup of the website.
The website is written in FP 2003, and the host does not support SE,
so I'm trying to publish with FTP.
There are other folders on the host server that are vb.net apps which I
don't want to publish; I want to skip them.
In the Remote WebSite window, I do CTRL A to select all files, and do CTRL
click to unselect the folders that I don't want to publish. The bottom
Status window says Publish all changed pages from Remote to Local. After I
click the Publish Website button, I get the error: Server Error: The URL
'2005StateReg/_vti_pvt' is invalid. It may refer to a nonexistent file or
folder, or refer to a valid file or folder that is not in the current web.
The website is www.hrshrm.org and the folder 2005StateReg is a vb.net app
which I don't want to publish since it's not part of the FP website.
Is it a problem that we have vb.net apps (folders) which are under the FP
2003 website? Any help is greatly appreciated!

If the host does not support FP extensions, you cannot publish from
the host to your PC, _vti_pvt (among others) folder is required and
will not exist on the host, or at least not in a usable form.
The best you can do (possibly) is select individual files and drag
them to your PC (from Remote to Local) - I have never tried this with
a FTP host, I find third party FTP applications (like Smart FTP)
better than FrontPage.

You actually put down FrontPage in this instance? I'm surprised.
;-) At any rate...

The trouble I have, with trying to use FP FTP with a non-SE host,
is that I cannot drag and drop files from the local window to the remote
window. I can sign into the remote site, from FP, just fine, and the files
on the server are shown in the remote window. However, when I drag a file
from the local window to the remote window, FP thinks about it for a while
and then says it cannot find the server/site on port 21. I normally use
WS_FTP LE and have compared my settings in that profile with the ones I have
set up in FP2003. They match.

That is why I prefer FTP clients to FrontPage - they work with FTP.
With some servers FrontPage has problems, with others there are no
difficulties.

Yep, something that works is always preferable. ;-) At any
rate... I also think that I know why FP doesn't work. I note in the
progress window, which is displayed while FP thinks about uploading the file
I've drag-n-dropped, that FP is displaying the supposed full URL for the
destination of the file. Well, in this case I'm sure the displayed URL is
wrong. In other words, I'm sure the FTP host directs my sign-in to the
appropriate folder location for the root of my site -- but I don't know what
that root folder name is and cannot specify it either in my WS_FTP LE profile
or in FP's configuration. I think WS_FTP LE must use a relative path for
uploading the files -- while FP attempts to use a full URL path (or something
along those lines). That doesn't work, though, because the root folder for
my site is missing from that resulting full URL.

Just a thought. ;-)
