Funny Word Doc's

Hello,

I have a problem on my machine. When i create a doc
sometimes, it creates a ghost like replica, that cannot
be opened, which starts like ~$etter.doc etc

Does anybody else have this problem, and if so can it be
stopped

Many thanks in advance

Fieldy

Hi,

I am not a 'Tekkie' but I think its a temporary file created by Word that should disappear when you shut it down. Don't know why it happens only sometimes. If you change your settings not to show hidden files maybe you will not see them.

Anyone else know?

This is normal. What you're seeing is the "owner file," a temporary file
that Word creates to prevent anyone else from opening the file for editing
while you are using it. For more, see "WD: How Word for Windows Uses
Temporary Files" at http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=211632

fieldy,

RegMan was basically correct.

Owner File (Same Directory as Source File):

When a previously saved file is opened for editing,
printing or review, Word creates a temporary file with
a .doc file name extension that begins with a tilde "~"
followed by a dollar sign "$" followed by the remainder of
the original file name. This temporary file holds the
logon name of person opening the file and is known as
the "owner file." When you attempt to open a file that is
available on a network and is already open by someone
else, this file supplies the <user name> for the following
error message:

"This file is already opened by <user name>. Would you
like to make a copy of this file for your use?"

If the Owner File is damaged or missing the error message
changes to:

"This file is already opened by another user. Would you
like to make a copy of this file for your use?"

Word automatically deletes this temporary file when the
original file is closed from memory.

Sometimes the last step fails.
