Gantt Timescale

I'm doing a 20 year strategic plan. My first task starts in 2008. I want to
format the time scale so that it starts in 2005 and goes to 2030. My version
of Project 2003 Pro always starts in 1999. Can you tell me that to do?
Thanks,

Have you set the Project start date, current date, status date
(Project/Project Information)?

yes, I set the project start date to 2005, and the chart still started at
1999. I created a dummy task from 2005 to 2030 and the timescale still
didn't change. Today's date is correct.

Strange. This question does come up occasionally so it might be worth
searching the archives of this group.

You could record a macro of navigating to today's date and associate it
with the ProjectOpen event but it's a bit of a sledgehammer approach.

I spent about an hour on a variety of searches and could find nothing that
helped.
I'm relatively new to Project, and don't know how to do Macros. I read a
tutorial on line and understand how to record a macro, but I don't know how
to follow your suggestion "of navigating to today's date and associate it
with the ProjectOpen event" so could you give me some more information about
how to do this?
Thanks,

Hi,

Alt+F11 (or Tools, Macro, Visual Basic Editor)
Upper left Window "Open" Project Global, then "Open" Microsoft Project
Objects, Double-Click "This Project(Global.mpt)
In the upper right window, below the line with
Private Sub Project_Open, write the following
Editgoto date:=vba.date

Close the VBA Editor
Open a project and you'll see.

I guess I'm missing something. I followed your directions and don't see any
difference. When I type Alt+F11 in my project I see the code you told me to
enter, but the timescale is the same. I'm trying to get the timescale to
start in 2005, and then go in 5 year increments.

Hello franks59,

I think the confusion is I believe both Jim and Jan may have
misunderstood what you are asking for. Both Jim and Jan's advice work
to help you scroll the view of the Gantt chart to the today's date
when you open the file.

What I *think* you want to do is change the timescale of the Gantt
display -- not scroll the timescale to a specific date range. The
reason your timescale display is showing 1999, 2004, 2009 etc. versus
what you want: 2005, 2010, 2015 is the start of the calendar in
Project is 1984 thus the 5 year increments hitting 1999, 2004 etc.

I don't believe you can accomplish what you wish.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.

Thanks, that's exactly what I wanted to do. If I can't do it, I'll go with
the timescale as is - it's just a matter of asthetics. I'm surprised about
that limitation since Project is so powerful otherwise.
Anyway, I appreciate all help.

You're welcome Frank and thanks for the feedback. As you say, it is
merely a matter of aesthetics, but it would be nice to have that level
of configuration.

I hope this helps. Let us know how you get along.
