Garbelled filenames in MS:WORD:MAC v.X

I just installed MS Word on my mac G4. I used to work on a Windows
XP system. So I have a bunch of files that come from the Windows
environment. When I open these in MS Word:mac v.X the file names
become garbelled.

Here is an example:

On the file system the file name is:

new claims for regular application inventor draft v0.6.doc

In MS WORD:MAC:

new claims for regul#1AA63D.doc

What gives?

The names themselves aren't garbelled, just their display.

Office v.X apps can generate a maximum filename length of 31 characters
(the old MacOS limit). They can work with files of more than that, they
just show a hash at the end. If you save the file, the filename remains
intact. You can't however, do a Save As... and use more than 31
characters.

As a workaround, if you want to generate files with longer filenames,
then save with 31 or fewer characters and rename the file in the Finder.
