Getting Word to add to dictionary

JE was saying you need to go to custom dictionary, office suite, word,
paragraph style, and paragraph language and have all set to same language.

Only thing is, I don't have foggiest idea where those things are. Anyone
might know? There is just no checkbox that says, "let word add to
dictionary?"??

Well, your OS, Office & Word are likely already US English versions.

You probably haven't changed any paragraph styles' language setting, but
you can check by choosing Format/Style..., select the style and look in
the style description. If it's not English (US), choose Modify and
select Language from the modify dropdown.

Likewise, you can use View/Reveal formatting and click on the problem
paragraph to see if it's been directly formatted (using Tools/Language).

Set the Custom dictionary's language using Preferences/Spelling and
Grammar. Click the Dictionaries button, select your custom dictionary
and set the language to None or to English US.

Thanks JE:
Ok, only thing I did was check the box for custom dictionary. I have no
idea what it means, but it appears that the add button is no longer grayed
out, and I can add as I'm able to do in Entourage.
