Glitches with Excel in Leopard

Bozrite

Please watch for the next update for Office 2008 and let us know if you
still encounter these problems after installing the update.

Thanks,

Pat

I installed the latest update as soon as it became available and have used it since, appears somewhat more stable (i.e. almost no crashes) but still have frequent "not enough memory" problems, where I save, quit Excel and reopen ... works for a while, then problem reoccurs.

Any help on this woul;d be appreciated,
Thanks

I have just bought OfficeMac 2008 and Excel will not open some files. Other
files open o.k. All the files are similar and there does not seem to be any
reason why some wont open

I am running 10.5.2 on a 24" iMac. The excel files were created on Office X

Can anyone tell me how to open these. I tried File Open but that does not help
What does "will not open some files" mean? Do you gen an error? Did you
check in the windows menu to see if the file is actually open but possible
hidden or off screen? Can you send me one of the files?

I have an unusual and weird problem with Excel 2008. I have a MacBook Pro - recently had to have the hard disk replaced. I reloaded Office 2008 and since then have discovered that when I enter data in an Excel cell it automatically divides the number I enter by 100 unless I include a decimal point - even when there are now digits to the right of the decimal point. This seems to be the case no matter how I format the cell for data.

Has anyone else had this problem? Is there a setting I am not aware of, or is there an update to the app that will fix it?

First thing to try is: Excel> Preferences - Edit. If there is a check in the
box for "Display this number of decimal places" clear the check.

I am on an iMac running Leopard OS X 10.5.3 and recently upgraded Office 2008 and the Excel Version is now 12.1.0. I am unable to open some xls files and am I not able to change (or even view) the Excel Preferences. When I try to open a file, the screen blinks as if it tries to open it, but it doesn't. There is nothing in the Window area - ie try to Cascade. The most recent file I tried to open was an Excel 97-2004 workbook, so I believe it may be a compatibility issue.

If you select a new workbook and with the blank sheet visible, can you get
to Excel's preferences then? There must be an active workbook in order to
access preferences.

As far as the file not opening, is it possible that the workbook has one or
ore worksheets with a slash (/) in the sheet name? If so, open the file in
another version of Excel and remove the slash from the sheet name.

I was unable to use 'find' on your site to track my question, if already answered, so sorry if this duplicates previous postings. I've a MacBook with OS 10.5.3 and recently purchased Office with Excel and Word 12.1.0. When double clicking in the Finder many files do not open; same result with Command-O. Opening from within the application is usually possible but clumsy.

Hi David -

I've no idea where you may have posted but this issue has been covered
repeatedly in the Word, Excel & Office groups. Unfortunately many of the
threads on the subject have been so badly contorted that the pertinent
replies are difficult to locate. Be that as it may, have a look here:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Word2008Issues.html#doubleclick

There are other less probable variations but the information there usually
covers the matter for a typical user. However, if you need more information
re ExtremeZ-IP server for example:

I'm not sure if this would qualify as a glitch, however I have a large and fairly computationally intensive spreadsheet that takes about 15-20 seconds to recalculate. The problem is that when I run it in WIndows on Office 2007, it is virtually instantaneous. It makes me think there is some function code that is slowing everything does. Has anyone else seen this type of issue.

Stability seems to be OK, and thanks MBU for putting x-axis data selection back in, now if only there was still VBA support...sigh

I'm new to Office 2008 on my MacBookPro running OS 10.5.3. Some, but not all .xls files created in Office X fail to open. These are simple spreadsheets no different than many that do open. A dialog box flashes much to quickly to read, the document does not appear and does not show in the window menu. No slashes in the titles or sheet names.

Hi Stephen -

Do the files open if you use File> Open from within Excel? If this is
happening only when you double-click the file icon on the desktop or in a
Finder window it may simply be that you haven't yet updated Office to
version 12.1.1 - See the same link the previous poster was referred to:

http://word.mvps.org/Mac/Word2008Issues.html#doubleclick

If the fixes in a thread don't work for you your problem must be *different*
in some way, so please post as a new message rather than replying to a
"seemingly related" issue. It also helps if you provide specifics about your
current Office & OS X versions.

I just updated all my software both mac and office 2004.

I CANNOT print from power point excel or word.

I can print out of every other application I use.

There is no useful advice out in the land of Googled forums.

Does any one have a solution do this yet? Just the PRINTING.

Although, all my images on word and excel documents only show up as black boxes everything takes forever to open and convert. That I can live with ... for now

I am having the same problem as Stephen Koenig, anyone know of this and can suggest a solution?

I am running OS 10.5.4 on a Mac Book Pro and Office 2008 (Teacher/Student version), with all updates current. I am saving in .xls format. After I finish my work on a spread sheet and close the application then reopen the application and retrieve the worksheet, I am missing the majority of my work that I had saved! Very frustrating. Ready to uninstall and return to previous version. Help!

Thanks for the response.
Unfortunately:
Files do not open with File>Open from within Excel.
We are currently running Office v12.1.1.
Any other thoughts?

Hi Boones -

I just updated all my software both mac and office 2004.

But have you checked for an update to your printer driver? Repair disk
permissions as well after any updating.

OK, try dbl-clicking while holding Shift to open the file.

If that doesn't work, create a new user account & see if you have success
opening the file from there.

Is there any chance your files contain sheets whose names contain characters
such as the forward or backslash characters (/ or \)? If so, we're aware of
an issue where Mac Excel 2008 can't open those files beginning with 12.1.
Those characters are now invalid for use in sheet names, but you should be
able to open the files and Excel should automatically change the sheet names
to use only acceptable characters.

If you could send me an example of a file like this and I can verify that
this is indeed the problem you're seeing. Also, if this is the problem
you're facing, there are a couple of ways to solve the problem: 1) open the
file in any version of Windows Excel, choose to repair the file when
opening, and then save the file or 2) Open the file in an earlier version of
Mac Excel, change the sheet names to remove any invalid characters, and
save.

We're working on a fix for this problem and hope to have an update with a
fix out soon.

Thanks,

Pat

This may be a very small problem, but maybe someone is having it also.

This happens in BOTH XL 04 & 08.
In the "General" prefs there is a checkbox for "Provide feedback with sound" I check the box, and after shut down, when I reopen XL the box is unchecked. Thought it was going to be in 04 only, but it is in 08 also.

Any ideas?

This works fine for me, you might want to verify and then repair your
permissions using the Disk Utility?
