Yes. Our bug report with Apple notes that Word and Entourage are also
affected.

Thanks,

I'm having calculation issues with Excel 2008 running under Leopard.
On my 1,8 Ghz PC the same xlsx worksheet takes about a minute to calculate.
On my AirMac 2,66 Ghz under OS X just the workbook takes around 5 minutes, and the whole worksheet takes about 15 minutes.
Does anyone has come across this problem?
Would you know a fix?
Thanks

Yes, we have all come across this problem. There is no fix. Excel 2008 is
just slower, sometime a whole lot slower. We can only hope that its
performance will be optimized in a future version or update. You need to
express your concern to Microsoft by using the send feedback option in the
help menu.

What happens if you save the file on your Mac, then close and re-open? Does
it still take that long to open?

After a few minutes of working on a spreadsheet, I can't get keyboard
commands to work. I have to go to the menu and "save" and then exit the
program, then start it up again to get keyboard commands back. Over and
over and over.

I have been having the same problem since I upgraed to Leopard along time ago. I can not find a fix anywhere!

I am on a macbook running under leopard which I bought in March this year. I also installed MS Office and am using excel 2008.

I encounter the problem with the keystrokes and most of all the other problems but did not bother reporting because, generally there is no response.

When things crash, I send back the feed-back reports but have not had one single response to date.

My problem today is that the excel is not calculating simple formulas i.e additions over a range of data or basic multiplications. It is also not copying down or copying across data accurately so if I drag the forumula in a cell down it copies the cell addresses correctly but displays the data results of the initial cells to all the new locations.

Which means, I cannot use excel! I do not have the alternative to use another computer and I am a small business owner, who relies on excel for many business operations.
can anyone help.

Ok, Let's try to attack this one step at a time. First, Microsoft greatly
appreciates the feedback from the crash reports. They are indeed examined
and studied. However, they do not provide any direct feedback, and you
should not expect any. Keep watching Mactopia for update announcements, and
hopefully you may see fixes to some of your issues in future updates.

Next, there are no calculation issues with Excel as far as I know. You need
to provide some specifics here, the data, the formula, and the results that
you think are incorrect. The 2 main reasons why Excel may not calculate as
expected are: 1)Calculation is set to manual instead of Automatic in the
preferences. 2)The cell where you entered a formula is formatted as text.
Change the format to general, and reenter the formula. Please check these.
If neither fixes the issue please post back.

You certainly should be able to use excel daily and reliably for your
business. Please post any further issues, be specific, and you'll most like
get a rapid and satisfactory response.

Do you mean click or double click? Make sure you are clicking IN the cell,
NOT on a cell border. Check to make sure Edit directly in cell is checked in
the EDIT preferences.

I am on an iMac running Leopard OS X 10.5.3 and recently upgraded Office
2008 > and the Excel Version is now 12.1.0. I am unable to open some xls
files and am > I not able to change (or even view) the Excel Preferences.
When I try to open > a file, the screen blinks as if it tries to open
it, but it doesn't. There is > nothing in the Window area - ie try to
Cascade. The most recent file I tried > to open was an Excel 97-2004 workbook,
so I believe it may be a compatibility > issue. If you select a new workbook
and with the blank sheet visible, can you get to Excel's preferences then?
There must be an active workbook in order to access preferences.

As far as the file not opening, is it possible that the workbook has one
or ore worksheets with a slash (/) in the sheet name? If so, open the
file in another version of Excel and remove the slash from the sheet name.

How would I open the file in another version if '08 is the only one on my computer? Are previous versions available inside this program? Sorry if I am being dumb! :) I am just sick about "losing" a file that I worked on all morning. Any help would be appreciated, or else I am going to have to re-enter all of my data. *sigh*

Paul,
Do you know if the work sheets do indeed contain slash characters in their
names? Have you made sure you have updated Excel to the latest version? If
you have only one version of Excel on your machine, the only way to use
another version is to take the file to another machine.

Paul -- if you're still unable to open the file after upgrading to Office
12.1.3, if you could send the file to me I may be able to recover your data.

Thanks,

I found another way around this. immediately open another worksheet. type a few characters. close this sheet - no need to save. typing into a new worksheet and closing it will "un lock" your keyboard. doesn't solve the problem - BUT - it is a whole lot better than save, exit, open, reload, yada yada yada

Are you running Excel 2004 on an Intel Mac on Leopard? If so, this is an
Apple bug that we've reported to them.

Thanks,

Pat

I am having a problem with Excel 2004 in that switching from one window to another has become unreliable. Attempts to change windows often results in an unwanted window remaining on the screen and even if the change is successful as often as not the window will have resized. This problem has occurred only recently. I also experience failure of spreadsheets to accept cell entries - the work around is to switch to another sheet and perform a cell entry and then return to the original file. This is not particularly satisfactory.

Please don't suggest that I upgrade to 2008: I tried that and found the lack of macros, lack of a page break preview view and other missing features, together with poor performance were such that excel 2008 is in the bin and will stay there unless major changes are made.

I can't believe that after all this time, the fundamental problem that started this post has not been resolved. I switched to Apple from WIntel a year ago and was looking forward to more fulfilling, enjoyable home computing.
I use Excel extensively in my hobby and was amazed and disappointed to find that because the keyboard goes dead after I type a few characters it is effectively un-useable on my iMac. What have we heard from Apple / Microsoft (and their MVPs) for the last few months? Nothing but finger-pointing "it's not our product its the other one" (Excel or Leopard - take your choice) ... and "the bug has been reported".
In what other sphere of commercial activity in retailing of mass-market products would you be allowed to get away with such appalling customer service? I have enjoyed using my Apple computer for the last year ... but will seriously consider switching back when the time comes unless Apple steps up to the mark and starts showing some interest in the problems of it's customers like the one that as been complained about by so many on this thread.
