graphical navigation/link bars

I have graphical link bars at the top and side of my site
(conference-coordinator dot com)

I have been trying to change my template linkbar designs to no avail..

I feel our site is too dark so I wanted to perhaps change the navigation
graphical link elements..
I change them in design view and preview the changes and everything looks
fine but when I upload they always appear as text links only.. why is this
happening? When I go back to the graphical navigation that I originally had,
and have now, it always changes back to that type without any problem.

,ie I have link bars based on the corporate theme but cannot change any link
bars to any other style
