Graphics links fail in .htm files

HELP

I have built several documents with graphics, a photograph and text in each
of them. When I opened a couple of these large files at the same time my
system froze and I had to shut the computer down rudely. I think I may have
corrupted some application files. The Word documents that contain all this
stuff seem to function fine, but when I open the .htm document with the same
stuff the text and its formatting comes up OK in the document but there are
only place holders for the graphics. Small clusters of colored circles. As
the document comes up I get several err messages like this:

! An external application must be launched to handle cid: links, Requested
link:

cid: 153394222@18012005-13F8

If you were not expecting this request it may be an attempt to exploit a
weakness in that other program. Cancel this request unless you are sure it
is not malicious.

_ Remember my choice for all links of this type.

Launch Application Cancel

Do you have any suggestions for what the problem might be?

Thank you
