Grid Lines Are Hidden Under Drawing

I am working with Word 2K. I started a new document and using the
Drawing toolbar I turned grid ines on. I then drew a 6" diameter
circle using ther grid lines to position it. The problem is the grid
lines do not show thru the circle. I need them to show as I have other
things to 'draw' within the circle. How do I make the drawings
transparent so the grid lines continue to show.
