group items on slide

How do you group separate items on a slide?

I'd then want to align them with other items that are grouped so that the
two groups are aligned in a certain manner...

Open the drawings tool bar by clicking

View --> Toolbars --> Drawing

Selct each item on the slide that you would like to group by holding down
shift and selecting them

On the drawing toolbar click

Draw --> Group >>

that does it
