Headers and footers won't print

I am dealing with a large document (about thirty sections) with Word
2004. Headers and footers (that is, the page numbers) seem to be
correctly inserted. They appear correctly in page layout.

However, when I go to print, the headers and footers don't show up in
the Print Preview, and don't print: There is just a blank space. This
only happens in some sections. Other sections are fine. As far as I
can tell after a good hunt, there is nothing different between the
formatting of the sections. I occasionally get a message saying that
portions of the header/footer are outside the print area of the
printer, but those print anyway, and it does not seem to have anything
to do with this problem.

I have copy-pasted the rogue sections to fresh blank documents. For
some sections, the problem then disappeared. But for others, the
problem just stayed with them.

Also, whenever I try to print the document, and specify a page range,
these 'rogue' sections are not seen. In order to print them at all, I
have to either copy/paste to another document, or manually select the
pages (and headers still do not print)

Can anybody advise?

I'm a bit less optimistic than macropod :) If you turn off the non-printing
characters (¶) & the content that doesn't print is still visible, Hidden
formatting isn't the problem. The fact that copying resolves the problem for
at least some portions also suggests that Hidden formatting isn't the entire
issue because the formatting would be copied as well.

What you describe sounds quite symptomatic of corruption within the
document. Have a look at the suggested fixes here - particularly #1 - as
well as the additional explanation of possible causes via the "click here"
link at the end of the opening paragraph:

My guess is "Margins". This is almost always a margin issue.

As Bob suggests: turn on your non-printing characters so that you can see
what you are doing.

The position of the page number is the "sum" of the position of the margin
and the space-after on the paragraph mark containing the page number.

Also: Check that none of those page numbers are "floating" page numbers
(i.e. Inserted incorrectly in the text instead of the footer...).

If you click on the page number and a little square box becomes visible,
that's it: it's a floating page number in a text box outside the footer.
Delete it and insert a proper page number in the footer.

Cheers

Thanks. I'll look into this, and report back with result
